Linda Manning, Ph.D.
Our earliest memories are all implicit memories, stored in the body. Even later memories from traumatic events are often stored exclusively in the body and inaccessible through cognition and “story.” This presentation will describe how we can work with these memories by working with the body and breath through somatic approaches that encourage the healing of trauma.
Track 3: Advocacy
The Traumatic Lives of Girls Tried as Adults
Thursday, October 17 from 12:35-2:00pm
James Dold
Last year Human Rights for Kids began identifying women across the United States who were incarcerated for crimes they committed as children. These women were subsequently sent Adverse Childhood Experiences Surveys and asked if they’d like to participate in a national study to help the public better understand what their lives were like as girls prior to their incarceration. This break-out session will feature a discussion on the findings of that survey and what it means for reform efforts focused on system-involved girls. In particular, we will discuss the impact that trauma has on a girls development and how these insights are relevant for system-stakeholders handling cases of girls facing transfer to the adult system. Lastly, we’ll discuss policy and practice solutions to disrupt the trauma-to-prison pipeline and the reforms needed to create more age-appropriate and trauma-informed accountability measures.
Transformational Systems Change
Friday, October 18 from 12:35-2:00pm
Linda Alexionik and Bruce Manciagli
The Hidden SIE Playbook for how you CAN change “The System” to See the Girl! - There’s an oft-repeated saying, “you can’t change the system” but the truth is there is a hidden playbook for changing it. This breakout session will take participants on a journey to explore this hidden playbook and reveal tools and resources that individuals, organizations and communities can use to actually change the system to “See the Girl.” This session is for all participant interests, whether you work directly with girls, conduct research, engage in policy or resource development, or you are an advocate for girls and the Delores Barr Weaver Policy Center.
